How to use

Enter the trip distance and your car's efficiency — most modern EVs return 3 to 4 mi/kWh, while European figures use kWh/100 km. Add your home or public charging rate per kWh (US residential averages sit near $0.15–0.17/kWh). The result shows total cost and the kWh drawn, plus a per-person split for carpooling.

Fast public chargers often cost two to three times the home rate, so a road-trip estimate should use the higher number.

FAQ

Is mi/kWh the same as kWh/100 km?

They are inverses. 4 mi/kWh equals about 15.5 kWh/100 km. Switch the unit and the calculator converts it for you.

Why is public charging more expensive?

Public DC fast chargers bundle network, maintenance, and convenience into the rate, often two to three times the residential price.

How much does a 300-mile EV trip cost?

At 3.5 mi/kWh and $0.15/kWh, 300 miles uses about 86 kWh, or roughly $13 — far below the same distance in a gasoline car.
